First adventure of 2012

To start the year off gently, we went on a little stroll through a bit of countryside in the Peak District. It all started smoothly as we left Longnor and headed to the valley. And then the rain came in. Lots of it! Still, that didn’t stop us, so we continued out of Hollinsclough towards our first challenge of the day, Chrome Hill. You don’t need a map here.. the only instruction is ‘up’! Admittedly not so easy with a gale force sidewind, but we managed it. The walk across the ridge was made all the more challenging for it. Decending the other side (the quick way, ie bum first), we had a quick stop for lunch before our second challenge – Parkhouse Hill. This begins with an easy (or not so easy in the wind) scramble before another narrow summit ridge. Once again we took the quick way down before our final challenge of the day – a brief nip up High Wheeldon for a photo with the trigpoint. When we say ‘nip’ what we actually mean is that High Wheeldon is one of those kinda of standalone hills that doesn’t really go well in to a route. If you want to see the top, you go up it, and back down it. All 300-and-odd metres of it!

Golden Duck Awards 2012 video

So what do Helios ESU get up to over the course of 12 months? The little movie should give you some idea :)

The HQ version will be on our Facebook page later this evening

Lobsters meet Bear!!!

An unexpected adventure for us on Saturday was meeting Chief Scout Bear Grylls. It was all very short notice, but we were invited down to the County Campsite at Drum Hill for an Explorer Scout and Young Leader Activity Day, with a visit from Bear as part of his “Bear in the Air” tour.

As well as taking part in shooting, archery, climbing, abseiling and other great activities, we got the opportunity to meet Bear as he dropped in on our climbing to say hello to us and shake claws with Larry.

Many thanks go to Tom Stoddart (County Commissioner), the rest of the County Team and the Staff at Drum Hill for pulling off such a fantastic day for us.

DofE Bronze, Helios style

A few months ago I got asked “for our DofE expedition, can we do Kinder?”. Having thought about some of the normal day hikes that we do, the Explorers’ navigation, their kit etc, I thought “why not”, even though it was very much above and beyond what is required for Bronze.

Fast forward a few months and we found ourselves in Charlesworth car park. It was perhaps inevitable that given the heatwave at Apex last weekend, this weekend would be worse. It was. Very worse. Clouds down to 250m, driving rain etc etc. Still, not to be defeated, they were off, over Cown Edge Rocks and Lantern Pike towards Hayfield camspite.

Several hours later they arrived at the campsite wet through but still in high spirits. Trangias were fired up and enough pasta in sauce to sink a battleship was conjured up.

On day 2, a decision had to be made regarding the route. With the weather still bad, did we go ahead as planned? We discussed with the teams what they would like to do and they felt that they were up for it. We assessed their kit, their abilities, the weather etc and decided that with a checkpoint up in the fog (translation: “oh sugar, that means we’ve got to go up there too, best pack the kettle…”) and GPS as backup, they’d be fine.

So off they went unto the fog once more…

Still smiling even though the weather had come in in style, they arrived at the Kinder Low Trig point around 2pm, and from there it was a straightforward (once they’d found their way out of the cloud) walk down Jacob’s Ladder towards Edale.

There was a real sense of achievment as they arrived at the car park in Edale still smiling and singing, having successfully navigated on of the most challenging areas around in driving rain and limited visibilty. Their assessor said that they were a credit to the Unit, and rewarded them with Heros. Many thanks to Bernard for assessing us in the not-too-favourable conditions this weekend!

They wanted a challenge, they got one, and dealt with it in style. Well Done!

Next adventure: Well earned rest

Review of Helios’ 2nd Year

… and as promised, here’s the review of the last 12 months.

Straight after last year’s birthday celebrations we were off on a Joint Camp with 3rd Brampton, 3rd Hindley, Helios ESU and 3H ESU at Linnet Clough, where the Chesterfield half got a good education in to the ways of the Wigan accent (“can I gu’t provvi Tony?”)

October brought us our first go at the Apex Extreme Challenge, the opportunity to test out some of the Scout Association’s new sex education activities (“could you use Polyfilla as a contraceptive”?), the bike ride and the Halloween trip out to Sheffield. The highlight of November was of course the opportunity to drive the trains at Barrow Hill Roundhouse, whilst December brought us “Fencing Tuition” and the winter hike. The winter hike was a particular favourite of mine, as whilst every other Unit / Group / school / office was shut due to the snow, with some great planning and teamwork, we managed to get a bunch of Explorers to the top of Winhill Pike in several feet of the stuff!

We started 2011 with the now traditional winter BBQ, followed a few weeks later by the District’s Golden Duck Awards. The awards gave us chance to show some Helios spirit as ESL Padge and Explorer Imran stepped in to help out the ‘band’ whose drummer, guitarist and bassist hadn’t turned up. Oh yeah, and we won the Gold Duck Award for the best photo / video slideshow too!! In February we went to the swimming baths (“what could possibly go wrong?”) where Conor managed to peel the bottom of his foot (for attention), and also got another day out in the snow on Derwent Edge. Rounding off the winter period was the camp at Hesley Wood (the less said about that, the better, I feel!!) and after 18 months of trying to arrange it, we finally got to do some kayaking skills with ICCC, thanks to Kieran.

We started the spring off with the Apex Overnight Challenge (a tale of boy meets girl…), and continued in to May with an adventure up Ingleborough, where the only half hour of rain was the half hour that we were on the summit. Also in May was the A-frame / pioneering pole relay (“have you done a risk assessment?”), whilst June brought us a new widegame – ‘urban manhunt’ – some climbing, some geocaching, and a weekend away at Trent Lock which saw some interesting attempts at raft building, an angry ginger man, and the best instructor quote ever (“OK, I’ll say it again, IN MONG”).

July was brought in with 2 full days of rock climbing at The Roaches and a camp at Gradbach, followed by two near disasters. It rained through the sunset hike, and for our day at the beach, it peed down again, and the theme park’s main attraction was shut. On both occasions however the Helios spirit shone through, and a great time was had by all. At the end of July and the beginning of August we got to progress our kayaking skills, with 17 members achieving their BCU 1 star award with the ICCC coaches.

The rest of July and August were fairly quiet due to holidays, until the main event at the end of August – Summer Camp at Blackwell Adventure. Over the course of 4 days we got to take part in zipwires, 3G swings, more kayaking and much much more. At the end of the weekend the staff told me that Helios were one of the nicest, most enthusiastic Explorer Units that they have ever had there, something which makes me immensely proud.

I’m sure that next year will be just as action packed. We’ve already booked our tickets to Kandersteg International Scout Centre for Summer Camp 2011. In terms of activities, still to come this year we’ve got caving, mountain biking, D of E expeditions, abseiling from Miller’s Dale bridge and the winter hike. Next year we’re hoping to offer more kayaking, more hillwalking (including some proper hills next year), more climbing (including another Learn2Lead course) and hopefully sailing too. We’re already working hard on the week camp programme too!

Special thanks go out to Catherine and Mark for organising tonight’s meal, and congratulations to all of our award winners. Extra congratulations to Caitlyn for achieving the coveted Golden Bull Award for Quote of the Year for “well if you go down that really long road near St. Mary’s, then it’s not there” when asked where Loundsley Green hall is!

Oh, and *clap*

Helios is two!

We’ve survived another one! Today marks the second anniversary of Helios’ first meeting, back in September 2009.

We’ll be celebrating in style later on this evening, with pizza, games and of course Awards (I wonder who’ll win the coveted “Golden Bull Award for Quote of the Year?”)

There’ll be a full review of the year online straight afterwards, but I don’t want to give too much of my after dinner speech away!

I would however like to take this opportunity to thank some of the many many people that work hard behind the scenes for making it all happen. In no particular order, I would like to thank:

  • Tony, Ben, Richard, Alastair, Matt, Debbie and Roger for their help on a weekly basis, both at our meetings and events, but also behind the scenes tirelessly planning and organising everything.
  • The Leaders of the feeder groups, and Martin, Claire and Amy at the District for their continued support.
  • Adam and the climbing team for comedy banter and the occasional bit of climbing training
  • Geoff and 1st Highfield for shooting, archery and kayaking activities
  • Simon, John and the team at Ichthus Canoe Club for their fantastic kayaking training
  • Ewan, Ian, Peter, Roger, TM, Greg, Pete and many others from Escouts for keeping me sane
  • Barney from Gilwell from answering my insane questions about activity rules
  • The staff at Hesley Wood, Gradbach, Trent Lock and especially Blackwell Adventure for putting up with my ever changing requests to get exactly what we want and more!
  • Everyone else who’s played a part in keeping the good ship lobster pointing in the right direction.
  • The young people of Helios Explorer Scout Unit, for being an absolute pleasure to be involved with

Until later, I shall leave you with one of my favourite photos from the year. I think this sums the Helios spirit very well.

Back from Summer Camp 2011

Well, that’s it, the main event is over. We’re back from Summer Camp already. 4 days and 3 night of insomnia, swimming, archery, 3G swing, zipwire, climbing, kayaking, rafting, Danish longball, orienteering, geocaching, volleyball and burning things at Blackwell Adventure have flown by.

Some of the highlight of the weekend include:

  • Swinny getting some way towards conquering his fear of height, and taking swearing to a whole new level in the process on the 3G swing
  • A 4 hour game of 10-a-side volleyball played right through until it was beyond pitch dark.
  • The inevitable disintegration of the East Side team’s ‘raft’.

Our thanks go out to all of the staff at Blackwell Adventure for helping us to have an awesome weekend. We’re sure that we’ll be back there in future.

Next Adventure: D of E practice expedition

Kayaking – the beginning…

After a year and a half stuggling to add ‘kayaking’ to the list of many activities that we can offer at Helios ESU, we finally came up trumps with the help of Ichthus Canoe Club Chesterfield (of which one of our Explorers is a member).

Over the last two weekends the coaches have run training and assessment sessions for us, covering the basics of paddling, steering, stopping etc, and of course capsizing!!

At the end of the 2nd session today, the coaches were pleased to write out 17 BCU 1 Star Award pass slips, and are looking forward to running future sessions to help our members further their paddlesport careers.

An ambulance visits…

… though thankfully not for one of the Explorers.

Many thanks go out to Adam Mitchell (also of Climbing Team Leader fame) for entertaining us tonight, and East Midlands Ambulance Service for lending us a vehicle.

Over the course of the night two groups of Explorers got to see all the bits and bobs inside an ambulance, including seeing how the sirens and radios work, and even got to receive a test call from the control centre.

We had chance to check that none of the Explorers were dead, including a 12 lead ECG, a peak flow competition (which Conor won!) and a “who’s the most chilled Explorer” AKA blood pressure test. Naturally, Joe Swinny was the most laid back. We finished the night by strapping an Explorer to a spine board, though we resisted temptation to leave her there, then worried some parents by sending another one home in a neck brace.

A great meeting and a great welcome for the 5 new Explorers that joined us tonight.

Joint Camp – a huge success

Helios ESU have just returned home from a fantastic weekend’s camping with 3rd Hindley Scouts / Explorers and 3rd Brampton Scouts at Linnet Clough

Thankfully the weather was nice to us, and we were able to see the summer out in style, conquering The Cube high ropes course, kayaking, low ropes, pedal karting in the mud, and the bouldering wall, as well as getting to meet people from the other groups.

Photos will, as ever, follow soon.

Next up – Apex Extreme – bring on the challenge!
