Joint Camp – a huge success

Helios ESU have just returned home from a fantastic weekend’s camping with 3rd Hindley Scouts / Explorers and 3rd Brampton Scouts at Linnet Clough

Thankfully the weather was nice to us, and we were able to see the summer out in style, conquering The Cube high ropes course, kayaking, low ropes, pedal karting in the mud, and the bouldering wall, as well as getting to meet people from the other groups.

Photos will, as ever, follow soon.

Next up – Apex Extreme – bring on the challenge!

We are one year old!

birthday-lobsterWell, we’ve made it! We’ve survived our first year. And what an adventure it’s been. Let’s have a quick look at some of the stuff that kept us entertained for the past 12 months.

15th September was the first ‘proper meeting’ (for a look at some of the ‘not proper’ meetings, read our ‘About’ page), and that’s whe the magic started. 17 kids from 3 different Scout groups, and 1 very stressed Leader. Luckily, within minutes, everyone got on like a house on fire (not literally of course, we would have burnt the hut down…), and Helios ESU had arrived in style.

4259462930_459c9a008cThe highlight of October was the punishing night-hike across Eastmoor, and the ill-fated halloween party-that-wasn’t-a-party; November brought us fireworks at Stand Rd, the bike ride (actually, the Explorers were more interested in feeding the ducks) and the start of our climbing training, and December closed the year off with some ice skating in Sheffield, where the Leaders took bets on whether or not Max would be the first to fall over whilst showing off. He was.

4252537228_1bbc43d521We wanted to start 2010 off with a difference. So, whilst a bit of snow fell, and schools and offices across the country were closing left, right and centre… we ploughed on and had a barbecue in the snow. This then became the first annual Helios ESU winter BBQ. February played host to the chippy walk where Kieran got us lost trying to find the largest body of water in Chesterfield. 4414975280_d5eb176bb6March saw out the winter with the first day hike of the year, including lunch atop Peter’s stone; and the winter camp at Bradley Wood. This weekend included the only two days of rain in the month. And boy did it rain. Luckily, you can still play Danish longball in the rain, so that didn’t stop us. We also got to excellent indoor climbing facilities at Bradley Wood for the ‘indoor’ section of the climbing badge.

4777850819_33945da71cApril was a busy month, with us entering four teams in to the Apex Overnight Challenge, abseiling off Miller’s Dale bridge, and attending the District Camp at Walesby Forest. In return, May was a quieter month, although we did get a vist from Unit 10 to teach us about safe sex. June was a month of outdoor activities, including the sunset dog walk on White Edge / Curbar Edge, and rock climbing at Stanage Edge where the credit of the day went to Imran for his epic struggle up Mantelpiece Hand Traverse (HVS 4c for you climbers out there).

DSC_0737We completed our first expedition in July, where some of the public must have been bewildered to see a 5 foot inflatable lobster being carried over the Kinder Plateau (# what’s that coming over the hill, is it a lobster? is it a losbter? #), and many members of the Unit attended the Peak 2010 international camp at Chatsworth. Finally, in August we had our Summer Camp at Beaudesert Park, including many of the adventurous activities on site, which was a roaring success. We’ve already booked next year’s at Blackwell Adventure.

4946238043_0729e2a33bWhew! Whilst that’s quite a list, I’m sure we can top it! A quick glance at the calendar up there -^ will tell you that 2011 is already looking like an action packed year, with 4 camps and 2 national competitions alreayd pencilled in, plus the chance to learn to lead climb, and to kayak, plus all the usual stuff (day hikes, mountain biking, hillwalking…..)

We’ll be celebrating later today with a formal meal (curry!) at our headquarters (The LoveShack), where we’ll have chance to talk over some of the highlight of the year, and I’ll get chance to say thank you to everyone (both Leaders and Explores alike) for helping to make Helios ESU’s first year such a success, but until then, thank you :) . There’s also be a short awards ceremony for some of the dafter achievements over the year. I wonder who’ll win ‘quote of the year’?…

Summer Camp report

Helios ESU have just returned from their first Summer Camp, held at Beaudesert Park over the bank holiday weekend. The four day format was a huge success, with an intense programme of activities, including crate stacking, Jacob’s ladder, zipwire, geocaching, volleyball, climbing and abseiling (most of which took place with an inflatable lobster krabbed to someone’s back.

Other highlights included Joe’s many pearls of wisdom which will be added to the quotes page soon, our home made death trap low ropes course and the awesome fire on the last night.

There was however one point of sadness – Dan burst the lobster. He accidentally stood on Larry, our mascot (blow up lobster). There will however, be a ressurection soon!

The only other lowlight of the weekend included the dreadful Take That tribute band shipped in to entertain the Guides on site.

Once Padge gets round to working the magic, the photos will appear on the website, but until then you can check them out in this flickr set

Planning is already underway for next year’s Summer Camp, which will be held at Blackwell Adventure the same weekend (26th – 29th August). The activities are likely to include 250m dual zipwire, 3G swing, high ropes cowstails course (like Go Ape), swimming pool, kayaking plus other lobster related nonsense…

A great day for climbing…

Helios ESU have just returned from a fantastic day’s rock climbing at Stanage Edge. This was to be the outdoor part of the climbing badge, but most people went beyond the requirements of the badge, ticking Velcro Arete (HS 4b) and Toggle (VS 4b). The most notable achievement of the day was Imran’s epic struggle up Mantelpiece Hand Traverse (HVS 4c)

In addition to the climbing, we also had a great picnic / sunbathing session, and Larry (our Lobster Mascot) made it most of the way up Mantlepiece Crack.

Special thanks go to our instructors Adam, Phil and John who gave up their opportunity to watch the England v Germany match to run the session. They have taped it though, so I’m sure when they watch it back they’ll be glad they went climbing…

Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2010

sainsburyImage1From 17th February Sainsbury’s will be handing out Active Kids vouchers, at a rate of 1 for every £10 you spend there.

Collect as many as you can and bring them in; we’ll be able to get free sports equipment. I know there’s only 20 of us, but even if we only get a free football it’s better than nothing! Nag all of your relatives (and don’t say you’re taking them to school – they get thousands, they won’t miss a few going to Explorers!)

Well Done to Explorer Scout Catherine…

TH1_13120104202catherine(2)“Chesterfield Scout Catherine Ward used her creative and cookery skills to raise money for a hospital unit.

“While working for her Chief Scout Gold Award, Catherine – a member of the 3rd Brampton Scout Group and a pupil at St Mary’s RC High School – raised £70 for the Breast Care Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital”.

August Update

ONLINE VERSION OF AUGUST EMAIL

As promised, here is an update on the progress of the new unit

Contents

1. Website
2. First Meeting
3. August Day Hike
4. Contact Details

1. Website

I have started off a blog / website at www.helios-explorers.blogspot.com . All programmes and notices will be posted on there, as well as links to photos etc after events. Please check it regularly as any updates or last minutes changes will be posted there. In fact, if you check it now you’ll find a draft issue of the 2009 Q4 programme for you to download.

2. First meeting

As discussed at the planning meeting, the first meeting will be Wednesday 16th September. It will be team building challenges, and foreign cooking using Trangias. A couple of thinks for you to think about before the meeting

Logo – Don’t forget that I need your designs for our logo, so we can get badges printed ASAP
Uniform - Have a think about what you would like to wear as uniform. I suggest that we look at what’s available from www.scoutshops.co.uk and a polo shirt and hoody from there, but it’s up to you
Subs – Subs will be £2.50 per week, but as we are new and have little funds could be as cheeky as to ask you to bring an additional £7.50 (so £10 total) within the first month to cover the cost of neckers and badges? If anyone has any trouble with this, don’t be afraid to speak to me in private, either phone (omitted frm web version), email or in person.

3. August Day Hike

There will be a day hike on Saturday 29th August. It is likely to be around the Hathersage / Bamford area. Nothing too strenuous to start with, probably around 7/8 miles with some moderate hills involved. I’ll email a consent form out by the end of this week – could you please print it out, fill it in and either hand it in to your Scout Leader or drop it through my letterbox (omitted from web version). I would also appreciate if you could reply to this email to let me know if you can or can’t (and why not!) attend.

4. Contact Details

I have attached the latest contact details spreadsheet (omitted from web version). If you know that anyone’s email address in it is wrong then please let me know what it should be. Also if anyone knows James Stockton, Will Hall or Max Ward’s email address please let me know ASAP! Could you please also send me a contact phone number by reply to this email. (mobile would be preferred, but if you don’t want to give this out for whatever reason than landline is fine)
